Deejay Bosca is a printmaker and papermaker from Pennsylvania. She holds a BFA in printmaking from the Tyler School of Art, and learned to make paper in Rome, Italy. She is currently on the team of a non-profit organization called the Abington Art Center, where she works as a Studio School Coordinator and Youth Instructor.
My practice revolves around the uncovering of imagery. I am interested in using experimental printmaking and drawing processes to reach imagery I cannot see readily in my mind, but that exists within my body.
I initiate drawings in various ways in order to incite these images; rubbing old works on blank papers, frottaging floor textures, pouring graphite powder onto blank surfaces. After sifting through my materials and marks, I eventually begin to see parts of an image, whether that be a piece of a flower, a budding pattern, or the traces of a body part. Only upon that realization do I make the conscious decision to fully realize an image.
Working in this manner allows me to fall into meditative states, bypassing inhibitions that paralyze me from beginning work. By challenging myself to release control, drawings arise that are naturally very personal, investigating themes of love, tenderness, eroticism, rage, and desire. The female body routinely surfaces in my practice, as do plant and animal motifs. I use these conjured figures to discuss emotions that I am experiencing at the time of making, frequently narrating my life through symbols that seem based off magical realism realms.
The resulting prints and drawings are full of harmony and dissonance. Portraits look back at the viewer with eyes that can be seen as either seductive or fearful. Flowers bloom with a sense of pride and great fragility. By altering color combinations and compositions, I attempt to control the levels of peace and agony the subject of a drawing experiences. I enjoy creating works that reflect emotional states in constant change, and by embracing a process of response and discovery I can more readily investigate my mind to begin these visual conversations.
